Solaris Japan changing to USDSolaris Japan changing to USDDiary

Just got this email...

All of our products will be priced in USD by default.

While you can turn JPY back on with the currency converter feature on our site, please note that this will be an estimate based on current exchange rates.

If you normally use USD:
Awesome! No more paying conversion fees
ᐠ( ᐛ )ᐟ
If you normally don't use USD:
Nothing really changes — you still pay conversion fees, just for another currency
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If you normally use JPY:
You're the only one who will actually notice a not-so-great change... we're really sorry...
(╥﹏╥)

So anyone smarter than me want to help explain why hehe

EsmeAllan21 days ago#124858534Not really relevant to the Solaris Japan thing, but the direct 1 to 100 people and companies use for easy conversion of USD to Yen really needs to die. It's just getting silly now, but I still see it an awful lot.
It's hard to move away from something that has stood mostly true for over 20 years. Sure, it's almost never exactly 100:1, but it hovers so closely that for napkin math the 100:1 makes sense. This last year has been wild and who knows how long it'll last. There's 20+ years of data to say "not for too long", but maybe it's different this time.

It's just getting silly now, but I still see it an awful lot. It's not really accurate but I think it helps to think of Yen as more conceptually aligned to a cent/penny/etc than a dollar/pound/euro/etc. So while not a great direct conversion, I think that the 1:100 ratio is still a good way to think about it.

TLDR: A 20,000 JPY figure costs about 14,350 US Cents. That's a more conceptually similar comparison.

CasperBat21 days ago#124857998For example, Super Dollfie Nico is USD $748+s/h on VolksUSA, but Y74,800+s/h (~$538 today) on Volks Japan.
The price difference? Volks keeps it. VolksUSA does not adjust the USD price no matter what happens to the USD/JPY exchange rate.

vergasama22 days ago#124845342i dont know why people buy from solaris, its the worst place to buy from. everything its expensive.for aftermarket and close to release date figures, yes. around the time preorders first open their prices are about the same as any other store and some people just prefer paying upfront, shipping included. they're also one of the few stores that are willing to undervalue and have solid customer service. not the "worst place to buy from" by any means lol

Not in my experiance. Also lots of other comfort/service has been better there than on Amiami.

Ouch, bad news. There's no way Solaris isn't going to build themselves a buffer into the exchage rate when they write prices in dollars. Means everything will become more expensive, for everyone.

Volks does this same thing for Dollfies, so we can get a preview of how it will likely work out for Solaris. The Volks Japan website charges in yen, and you pay whatever conversion rate your credit card gives you. The Volks USA website charges in dollars, and you pay whatever dollar price Volks tells you to pay. For example, Super Dollfie Nico is USD $748+s/h on VolksUSA, but Y74,800+s/h (~$538 today) on Volks Japan.

herbal22 days ago#124857398Looks like most people do not understand how Forex works.
It is also entirely contextual on what USD exchange rate is used and all the implied rates in the conversions.
Your google AUD/USD, AUD/JPY rates are spot rates and never obtainable in real exchange. The reality of currency exchange is by virtue of USD as the reserve currency - if you exchange AUD for JPY, what actually happens is you exchange AUD for USD first, then USD into JPY. which is why functionally if you use say Paypal or credit card, your real exchange rate from a currency to USD has smaller spread than what you get for a currency to another non-USD currency, because of this 2 step mechanism.

Can you explain this like I'm 5 T_T
