Apparently Ikea will discontinue the selling of Detolfs. I don't know exactly when, so get one while you can.

It's more likely that Ikea is planning to do a major revamp of the product line. They will likely change either the packaging or the materials. (and the inner cynic says this is to justify the price increases)

My latest batch of Detolfs from this month already have some new modifications (besides the thinner shelves). There are now plastic tabs at the end of each of the outer glass panes (besides the door). They also now have a plastic tab to hold the back pane in place during assembly that's left in the final assembly.

I already own 23 Detolfs so it'll be interesting to see what all changes.

There seems to be articles going back over a year talking about Ikea Detolf being discontinued. What is the source of the news mentioned here?

In my country, there has only been white Detolfs available for almost 2 years now. So I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case.

However, like the above answers, I believe a rebranding is possible; like how they did with Morliden to Högbo (and how absolutely pointless that was lol).

While I love adding new Detolfs side by side for almost 14 years now, I would actually welcome a rebranding, because it has its own issues. For example something with adjustable shelf size, dust proof or something taller would be amazing. I know these are all a stretch, but i wish they'd consider.

My guess is that in the majority of the "sudden shattering" incidents, the issue was with the assembly of the Detolf (regardless if the person will admit it or not). Either by over tightening the screws (which is admittedly difficult to do), or by not properly inserting the glass into the slots. What looks fine (particularly not fully slotting the glass in) is just a ticking time bomb for when the glass eventually fails due to the compression.

Glass doesn't just shatter without reason. It's not like we drive around boxes with glass inserts on them or anything.

Hey everyone, hope you’re all enjoying your collections! I’ve been exploring the idea of introducing a new line of illuminated display cases specifically designed for collectors like us. I’m aiming for a balance of aesthetics, practicality, and affordability. Would love to hear your thoughts - is this something you’d be interested in? Thanks in advance for your feedback![img][/img]

I mean, it sounds like a decent idea, but without investment into the idea from other people, I can't really see it taking off. Manufacturing a product for retail is a lot more difficult than modifying something which already exists, and even then, modification is a lot more feasible for most collectors than buying into this idea of a specially made case.

I do have a suggestion though. If you are interested in making this product more affordable, assuming you actually get this idea off the ground, then I suggest substituting glass in favor of plexiglass. Plexiglass is made from acrylic, easy to source from hardware stores/plastic distributors, is easy to cut, and is relatively cheap. Importantly, plexiglass also reflects harmful UV rays and works well to protect collectibles from dust. I had a sheet specially cut by a company known as Professional Plastics for one of my repurposed display cases, but I'm going to cut my own sheet for my other case that I haven't done yet. With the pandemic over, I'm sure you will be able to find plexiglass around from any plastic workshops which may have overstocked because of the demand for protective shop fronts during the pandemic.

I'm planning on using these as inspiration:

I want to design the white case but with RGB effects. The dimensions are approximately 4.92 feet x 3.28 feet x 1.31 feet.

I appreciate your suggestion about using plexiglass, but I feel tempered glass will be better for displaying purposes.

My price range, I'm thinking around 700-900 USD per unit. Thoughts?

I do agree with you that tempered glass does look better, but tempered glass is also prone to shattering in a way which plexiglass does not; plexiglass can chip or break into chunks if its damaged, but ultimately it is less prone to breaking and is more durable than tempered glass. Even though plexiglass is more durable, I will add that tempered glass should not break in this capacity, provided that the end user properly installs the glass and secures it safely into whatever you design to hold it. Also, tempered glass can be cleaned with products like Windex or other ammonia-based cleaners, while plexiglass cannot, so take that information as you will.

As for the RGB lighting, LED lights are relatively cheap. In my opinion, I think that built-in fixtures look the best. Some of your examples have these built-in fixtures while others have strips. Personally, I would design built-in LED lights for your case and allow the end user to install their own light strips.

For the sake of my convenience, I'm converting your measurements to inches. I rounded each measurement to this: 59 inch x 39 inch x 16 inch. A case of this size isn't a bad idea whatsoever, but I'm trying to figure out how you're planning to charge $700-$900 per unit. Am I misreading your measurements somehow? What other materials besides tempered glass are you planning to use?

Seems pricier compared to many of the popular options popularized by the community. I might be missing something though and the price makes sense and I just can't see it.
